Heading into a renovation, you probably have a general idea of the type of kitchen you like- modern, contemporary, traditional- but have you thought about the less pretty things that go into a renovation like how your sink will be mounted? We didn’t think so. Below are three must-ask questions for your contractor and designer-
1. What are the building codes?
It’s no secret that yellow tape is a pain to jump through. What’s even more painful? Finding out your $10,00 kitchen renovation isn’t up to code or didn’t have the correct permits pulled for the project thus making it null and void. Permits and codes will vary from project to project, municipality to municipality so double-check with your contractor and local government to make sure all your bases are covered before you take a sledgehammer to your kitchen walls.
2. What finishes should I use?
From faucets to countertops, your new kitchen is a plethora of decisions that will need to be made. Think about how finishes can complement each other- not everything needs to be stainless steel. Try pairing brass fixtures with stainless steel appliances for a subtle, modern contrast. When looking at countertops, in addition to the various materials you have to choose from, you will need to choose between a polished or honed finish. A polished finish will provide you with a hard-faced, reflective surface whereas the honed finish will give your kitchen a softer more organic feel.
3. What’s the worst-case scenario?
By now we have all seen a renovation take a nosedive quick (thanks, HGTV!). While one never hopes that they’ll need to confront the worst-case scenario, better to go into your renovation knowing what COULD happen if the floor falls out from beneath you, figuratively or literally. Start a dialogue with your contractor and learn what they think potential pitfalls could be- think things that could be hiding in walls like electrical and plumbing- and what the recovery cost and time maybe if everything goes south.
