When purchasing natural stone countertops, knowing the difference between a crack and a fissure can help save yourself from wondering whether your countertop has a natural or unnatural opening. Many times in the industry, fabricators will often get calls about cracks in natural stone countertops. However, sometimes these “cracks” are not actually cracks, rather they are fissures, a natural feature of the stone that can resemble a crack. How can you tell the difference between a crack and a fissure? Here’s how:

The Mohs scale is a tool used to define a mineral or natural stone’s strength and resistance to scratching. The scale utilizes a 1-10 ranking, 1 meaning the stone easily scratches. This scale is widely referenced in the countertop fabrication industry. The scale was created in 1812 by geologist, Friedrich Mohs. The test to determine a stone’s Mohs rating is fairly simple, it can be done by taking one stone or mineral and scrapping it against another. If a scratch is produced by the material being tested on the other stone, it is known to be harder.

Like many natural stones, granite is porous, meaning it is prone to staining. It is recommended that sealant should be applied to your granite countertops every 5 years to prevent staining from water, oils, and other liquids. When sealed properly, oils and other liquids will bead on top of the countertop rather than seeping into the stone.

A countertop overhang is a part of the countertop that extends past the cabinets and covers the drawers and cabinets to help prevent spills of crumbs and liquids from falling off the edge of the counter. A standard countertop usually has an overhang of 1½ inches. Although some countertops may have a longer or shorter overhang, this number is generally the standard length for an overhang in homes.
