If you don’t want to take the plunge and rip out all of your cabinets, don’t worry- a nice way to tell if open shelving fits your style is to take the doors off your existing cabinets and see if you love the way it looks. In addition to generally providing an airy feel, open shelving can force you to keep things neat and organized.
Two-Tone Cabinets
So you’re not ready to give up your cabinetry just yet but still, want a look that is modern and unique? Two-tone cabinets may be more up your alley. A great opportunity to play with color or incorporate different materials like natural wood, two-tone cabinets can provide a way for you to influence your kitchen with your personal style and taste while not straying too far traditional design styles.
Contrast
Gone are the days of having to choose between a light or dark palette for your kitchen. Why not have the best of both worlds? Not only does using contrasting colors (think white countertops and navy cabinets) avoid giving your kitchen an overarching sense of starkness or dreariness, it can also provide you with the opportunity to showcase your personality. Think outside the box when it comes to designing your kitchen- contrast doesn’t have to be limited to color. You can incorporate contrasting textures such as natural stone and marble or contrasting styles to appease both your personal taste and your partner’s. Are you more modern while your counterpart loves mid-century touches? Be careful and stick and to one central contrast point be it color, design, or materials. While one pair of opposites attract, too many can leave your space feeling disjointed.
More Stone, Less Tile
Subway tile has been all the rage of the last 5 years, 2019 may the year we see it recede into the background as more natural materials like marble and quartzite take center stage in the world of backsplashes. Stacked stone can provide a nice textural element to your kitchen but it may not be the easiest to clean, especially behind the stove. Quartzite can be an excellent choice if your budget permits and you are looking to make a statement with your renovation.
Statement Sinks
Move over a rustic farmhouse- just kidding. There will always be a special place in our hearts for farmhouse sinks as a classic, but as more and more options grace the market, you have choices surrounding where you do your dishes. If you’re looking to mix metals, a copper sink could be the perfect addition or you could keep with something more traditional but add a pop of color. Going for a super modern look? Concrete can be an option for you too though definitely at the pricier end of the sink spectrum.
